Can MDM distribute IP addresses to devices that connect to Wi-Fi?
On iOS / iPadOS and Android, MDM cannot distribute a fixed IP address (Static IP) for each device.
What you can distribute with the MDM Wi-Fi configuration profile is basically network connection information shared by all devices, such as the SSID, password, authentication certificate, and proxy settings.
iOS / iPadOS
There is no feature to set an IP address in a profile.
To set it manually on the device, follow the steps below.
Settings > Wi-Fi > Tap the "i" icon to the right of the target SSID > Configure IP > Manual
Android
You cannot use a Wi-Fi configuration profile to distribute a fixed IP address to each device in bulk or assign one individually.
Recommended method: fixed assignment on the DHCP server (DHCP Reservation)
To assign a specific IP address to each device, a common and reliable method is to reserve a static IP address for the device's MAC address on the DHCP server (a router or network device).
Recent OS versions enable "MAC address randomization (private MAC)" by default. This applies to Android 10 and later, and to iOS / iPadOS as well.
To use DHCP Reservation, you must first distribute a profile setting that disables randomization so that the device uses its unique hardware MAC address.
| OS | Profile item | Setting value |
|---|---|---|
| iOS / iPadOS | Disable MAC randomization to avoid association | Enabled (on) |
| Android | MAC address randomization | No randomization: use the unique hardware (burned-in) MAC |
