What does the Sync in Progress status mean?

This status means that the MDM server has determined that a sync with the device is required and has scheduled the sync for the next automatic sync run.
The MDM server determines that a sync with the device is required in the following cases:

  • A device was registered to a template
  • An Application, Profile, or similar item was added to or removed from the template the device is registered to
  • An Application, Profile, or similar item registered to the same template as the device was edited
  • The template the device was registered to was switched to another template

After the push is sent by the automatic sync, the status automatically changes to Not-Synchronized or Synchronized as soon as a response is received from the device.
If the command from the server is a profile installation and the device is locked, the device cannot execute the command, so the status remains Sync in Progress.
The sync status transition after the device is unlocked differs depending on the OS version. On iOS 5 to 7, it changes to Not-Synchronized; on iOS 8 to 11, it changes to Synchronized.
