Can I check the profiles and policy settings applied to a device on the device itself?

Yes, you can.
You can check the applied profiles and policy settings in the following places on the device.

(iOS)
Go to Settings > General > Device Management > Remote Management to check the profiles applied to the device, as well as distributed apps and certificates.

(Android)
Open the MDM agent app, and then go to Profile Settings > Profile Settings to check the policy settings applied to the device for each item.
