An error appears partway through an OS update performed on the device

If the profile setting Defer software updates sets an OS version other than the latest as the update target, an error may occur because that OS version has passed its update expiration date.
Check on the Apple support page whether the target OS version is still within its validity period. (See Defer software updates.)
